Long Over Due Post

It's been literally years since my last post.  The main update is Mel's treatment has been successful and she had the all clear for 5 years now.  Which is a massive relief.  I'll probably post again about this but to be honest its a distance memory now and we're always enjoying life right now. We've also moved house in this time and have been in the new house nearly 3 years now. I'm planning on adding to the blog with details of trips we've had as well as races and other interesting things we get up to.  So expect to see further updates over the next few weeks including our recent trip to Cornwall as well as previous trips.  I will back date the publish date so they appear approximately when they happened.

Bibury then home - 04/06/23

Image
A leisurely lie in today before a big breakfast and the on to Bibury one of the prettiest villages in the country. A nice little stroll around the village after we had parked up next to the river. The water was so clear the kids were spotting the fish in the water. Mel found a geocache and then the last leg of the journey home started.     Pretty easy couple of days of driving all in all after a really fantastic week away.

Hot Fuzz & Bath - 03/06/23

Image
Up early for a 7:15 departure. First up we headed to Wells in Somerset to have a look round the city when Hot Fuzz was filmed. This time we avoided Plymouth and the journey north of Dartmoor was uneventful although when we turned off the motorway to go to Wells we could see in the distance the traffic on the motorway had ground to a halt. Got off at the right time!  Wells is really picturesque and we soon spotted the filming locations for the swan hotel, the crown pub and the market place where the final climactic shoot out take place.     The Crown The Swan Hotel We did also look round the bishops place and the outside of the cathedral. A tour guide told us about the Vicar’s close one of the oldest terrace streets in the country which we saw as well as the burial place of Harry Patch the last British fighter from WW1. Then onto Bath. We took the more scenic route this time and the car struggled up some of the hills in Bath as we made our way to the park and ride and in...

Coverack - 02/06/23

Image
Final day in Cornwall today and it was windy and overcast so we had a trip to Coverack for a walk along the front.  Had a quick look at the RNLI shop where Amy and Sophie got some sweets before walking on to Porthbeer cove via the headland. Then taking a detour to look at the sculpture park.       These are mostly metal sculptures of birds and animals in a very angular style. Good fun trying to guess what some were. Walking back in time for some lunch we stopped in the harbour lights cafe for more pasties and cakes and some hot drinks for a change to warm us up. The people on the table next to us (two old women) tried to sneak off without paying. Then for our last afternoon it was back to our favourite spot at Mullion Cove for more jumping and swimming. Amy completely conquered her fears and was jumping off the top over and over and over. At the end of the day we had to practically drag her back to the car. Last meal we went to the on-site restaurant before packing u...

St Michaels Mount - 01/06/23

Image
Not such an early start today as we made our way to St Michaels Mount sun was out today but the wind was still a bit chilly. After parking up we made our way across the causeway stopping briefly for some rock climbing to the mount. It’s a steep walk to the entrance of the castle. Before going in we stopped on the battlements by the cannons for a bit of lunch and to enjoy the views before the castle tour. Really beautiful place with amazing gardens. Looking over the castle walls was a little vertigo inducing. Sophie was taking loads of great pictures. After the tour of the castle we stopped for ice creams and purchased boat ticket back as the tide was now in and the causeway was covered. Then we walked around the beautiful gardens. So many flowers out it was so colourful.   “Walkin walkin still not walkin” “It’s roped off back up back up” Robert did a spot on imitation of anAmerican dad telling his kids off for not walking. His face was a picture according to Amy when he heard Robe...

Epic Boat Trip - 31/05/23

Image
Today we headed to Penzance to do a rib boat trip round Lands End to Hayles (next to St Ives) with Coast Boat Trips . So up and out early again. As we approached Penzance there was a huge queue of traffic going in the opposite direction at least 2 miles long. Didn’t really see anything to have caused such a queue. Got our first glimpse of St Michaels mount as we made our way to the car park. Was very overcast today and quite a strong wind. We’d deliberately arrived early to give ourselves time to grab an early lunch and let it go down before the boat trip at 12:15. So headed to lavenders bakery for some amazing Cornish pasties and Belgium buns. Kids had monster sausage rolls and cakes. Then we wandered around a few shops before heading to the harbour to start the boat trip.      We were the first to arrive and were met by Eve who was really friendly and chatty, getting us suited up in waterproofs.    Jack arrived in the boat with the previous group and asked who...

Praa Sands - 30/05/23

Image
Today we ventured further afield going to Praa Sands a beautiful wide beach.  Learning from yesterday we set up above the high tide line.     Girls were tired today and a little more lethargic and had brief dips in the sea before sunning themselves. Mel and I had a few games of frisbee and I had a good swim. Afterwards chatting to one of the lifeguards who talked about the area he covers for the season.     He could cover anywhere from Praa sands to Coverack. He’s only been back in the UK for a month after lifeguard in Australia. The girls and Robert were a little tired and just chilled for some of the time. We had some excellent pasties for lunch and the girls had milkshakes agonising over which of the 22 flavours to choose from.   For the afternoon we headed to Porth Levan and had a lovely Cornish afternoon tea in the Twisted current tea room .    Robert wanted the jumbo fish finger sandwich. I got a call about our boat trip booked for tomorrow...
