Learnings for Next Time

I've had a couple of weeks to reflect on the experience and what have I learnt?

  • Better preparation and get there a little earlier next time.
  • Pack transition bags ahead of time and include options for all weather.
    • I should have included overshoes for the bike, especially considering how wet it was.
    • Socks, talc and vaseline.  Just these alone would have meant knocking minutes off the run time.  The sore feet meant i was soooooo slow.  Taking the first few miles as an indicator I could have gone at least 20 minutes quicker.
  • Being better organised in transition.
  • Anne-Marie's flapjacks will be my standard fuel going forward.  So much nicer than energy gels and much more palatable.
  • I thought before hand it would be hard but to be honest i really enjoyed it.  The atmosphere and support were fantastic and taking these learnings i could make big improvements.

I intend to do some more of these middle distance triathlons and get the technique right before attempting a full Ironman but I feel really confident I could do it.

Watch this space. . . . .

Next up for me will probably be run norwich in August, I have officially started my next TrainAsOne plan for this.  Looking to get round in under 46mins.

Did you eat on both the bike and when you were running? And if so, was it different for each of them? When I did my 100k (feels like a "during the war" statement now) training I found I could only eat flapjacks during the stages I was walking plus I found it quite hard to create a "loaded" flapjack full of seeds and nuts etc as they ended up being either too hard or too soft.

I mainly had the flapjacks during the bike leg. I had some gels on the run. The banana flapjacks my sister made were just heavenly and not once did i feel out of fuel. I used the gels to my dislike as a top up. They also offered at the drink stations water, energy drink and coke. After the first lap I was choosing the coke to drink as the sugar hit was much quicker.
