Ironman Registration - The Day Before

We had a week away in the Yorkshire Dales from the 28th May and I had intended to do no training.

We had a great week with great weather which I'll detail in a later post.  Anyway the week before the race I cycled to work one day and was in York for work on one day as well so was a good week if a little tiring.  I tried to book onsite camping for the Saturday night but they wanted £30 per person per night which I though was way too high.  Fortunately my sister (Sniff) managed to book a site for two tents for the night for £10.  Bargain and the site when we arrived was better than expected.

Anyway the trip up was uneventful apart from listening to the last 20 mins of the England v Australia win in Brisbane.  We arrived at the Shugborough estate at 1:15pm and made our way to registration.

The process was pretty easy and slick to do and the staff on hand were all really friendly.

In your registration pack you get a nice rucksack and your race numbers, transition bags (Blue for Bike kit, red for run kit and white for finish clothes).  Stickers for your bike, there stickers for your helmet and for race number tattoos.

You also get a wrist band which you have to leave on the whole time, this is checked every time you go into the transitions.  I racked my run kit before we headed over the chase water to rack the bike.

There was a little bit of confusion around when your bike had to be racked.  Turns out the registration at Shugborough closed at 4pm and the T1 (10 miles away) also closed at 4pm.  There were a fair few people caught out by this and it wasn't very clear this was the case.  Despite this everyone was friendly and helpful.

Also all transition bags needs to be racked on the Saturday.  I got the minimum into the bags and didn't think at all about alternatives which would come back to bite me later.

Everything is clearly signed.

Once I was happy with the bike location and the bag was ready we had a quick look at the swim exit before back to Shugborough for the race briefing.

Lead but an exuberant American who had a muted English response.  They covered all the usual rules and drafting rules and what to do on route.  For me I was trying to take it all in.  Quick shot of the finish line and the mandatory podium celebration.

Was starting to get a little tired so as soon as the briefing was over it was back to the car and on to the campsite.  Only 15mins away from Shugborough.

Once the tents were up (Sniff won that race) we had a bite to eat in a nearby pub I put my race number tattoos on and then tried to get my head down for the night.  To be honest I didn't sleep much more than a few hours.
